Three Reasons Why You Need a Content Strategy

October 20, 2014

What do you want to be when you grow up?

When your teacher asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up and you decided that an astronaut was going to be your career choice, there were high fives all round. Stopping to think about it then still coming up with nothing wasn’t really an option. It’s good to have a life plan, after all – even at eight years old.

Now, maybe at first glance it’s a bit odd to compare Life with a comparatively unimportant content strategy – until you realise that a content strategy is actually found at the heart of your business’ success. Not convinced? Here are three good reasons why you need a content strategy of your own.

A content strategy = vision

When you know where you’re going, you’re on a fast-track to getting there. If you make it up along the way, chances are you won’t get there. Or, if you do, it won’t be nearly as quick, efficient or easy as it would have been if you’d followed a plan in the first place. Don’t just start blogging because everyone else is. Create a content strategy to give your company direction and purpose.

A content strategy = inspiration

Every writer has a great fear of that awful phenomenon called Writer’s Block – it’s as demoralising to writing and creativity as the Road Runner is to poor old Coyote. But when you have a solid content strategy in place, you know exactly what you need to write, when. Suddenly, it’s not hard coming up with inspired writing week-to-week any more. Follow your content strategy to keep valuable and relevant content coming through your channels.

A content strategy = consistency

When you’ve got multiple channels to think about, it’s easy to forget what communication you’ve got going across them all. Incorporate all of your communication channels into the one content strategy to ensure that your business says the same things to everyone, regardless of where they read it. Say you’re launching a new product or competition. Develop your idea then incorporate your website, social media, email campaigns, blog, pamphlets, print ads, radio jingles and editorials into an overall campaign for consistent communication and easy consumer recognition.

So you’re sold on the need for a content strategy, but you’re still not really sure where to start. Give the friendly Lingo team a call to see if we can help (we can).

[…] Because it makes your life so much easier, that’s why. Yes, you need to put in a bit of work at the beginning, but once you’ve got a plan, you know what you’re doing week-to-week. A content strategy gives your business vision and purpose, and if it’s done correctly you’ll never get to a week and think, “Oh crap. What am I going to tell my audience today?” […]
